Why micropayments need a protocol
Sub-cent payments never took off on the web because card networks charge fixed fees and checkout flows are built for shopping carts, not a single paragraph of analysis.
HTTP 402 was reserved decades ago for exactly this use case. x402 gives it a concrete shape: a server can respond with payment requirements, a client can pay in stablecoins, and the resource unlocks without accounts or subscriptions.
